On 8 March 2011, Access Info Europe launched its first Twitter campaign asking for information about the status of Spain’s access to information law from the Ministry of the Presidency. During the day around 300 people sent a tweet to the recently inaugurated Twitter profile of the Ministry, with the message “Where is the transparency law?” The ministry responded rapidly, by phoning Access Info Europe and offering a meeting between Minister Ramón Jáuregui and representatives of the NGO platform the Coalición Pro Acceso on 17 March.

Action: Joint Requests on Data Retention 10 March 2011, Madrid/London: Access Info and Statewatch are inviting civil society across Europe to take part in the first joint information request campaign under the Access for Rights Project.The goal is to present the same request to governments across Europe and then compile the responses for use in human rights advocacy work.

The Open Cyprus Project launches its Report: access to information is the exception and silence the rule in Cyprus. 24 February 2011, Nicosia/Madrid: With a level of 75% of administrative silence in response to information requests, public bodies across the island are violating the public’s fundamental right to know according to the Open Cyprus Project. Ten Open Data Guidelines launched in Tbilisi Access Info Europe welcome the publication this week of the Ten Open Data Guidelines drafted by TI Georgia, in consultation with Access Info Europe. These guidelines are designed as a guide to help agency heads, IT managers, and web developers create open data websites. The guidelines provide details of how these are to be achieved. They provide a useful structure which Access Info recommends as a model for the elaboration of similar principles in other countries and at an international level.
