10-11 April 2015, Ankara, Turkey

Access Info Europe, in collaboration with UNESCO, is organising a two-days event in Ankara to present the Legal Leaks Toolkit and discuss how journalists can use the freedom of information right in their job.

The first day will start with the keynote speech of Faruk Bildirici  (ombudsman for Hürriyet) on the legal and ethical difficulties of doing investigative journalism in Turkey. Bildrici’s speech will be followed by a round table on the state of Turkish journalism titled  “Lifting the lid” – Accountability vs Impunity. Strategies for making in-depth journalism part of the Turkish media scene.

The round table will be moderated by Yavuz Baydar (P24) and it will include the participation of Gavin Sheridan (Investigative Journalist and FOI expert), Staffan Dahllöff (Investigative Journalist and FOI expert), Sezin Öney (columnist for Taraf newspaper) and Ciğdem Toker (Investigative Journalist for Cumhuriyet newspaper).

On the second day our Legal Researcher and Campaigner Victoria Anderica will present the Legal Leaks Toolkit and discuss the importance of the right of access to information for journalists, with a view to open data, data journalism, and data security for journalists as well.

Other sessions will cover the integration of access to information into journalistic research strategies (Gavin Sheridan), the procedure to file information requests at the EU level (Staffan Dahllöff) and introduce attendees to Data Journalism (Gavin Sheridan).

The final part of the event (15:30-17:00) will be dedicated to practical training: journalists will work in groups to prepare and submit access to information requests related to their investigative stories. Victoria Anderica, Staffan Dahllöff and Gavin Sheridan will lead the following feedback discussion.
